Day 7 JUNEAU where we are?

We arrived in Juneau, Alaska’s state capital, about 8:00 AM and found a tour around the city, Douglas Island, and Mendenhall Glacier. No Sarah Palin sightings, because we learned she does not stay in the governor’s mansion (sound like Blago for those in Illinois?). Juneau is only accessible by boat or plane, adding to the high cost of living in this area. Douglas Island is connected by bridges to the Juneau mainland . Our bus driver/tour guide was a full blooded Klingit Indian and his father had been a chief. He was very proud of his heritage and shared some historical perspective and customs of his people during our ride.

Quiz for today... Which of these is the oldest? (Do not judge by hair color alone)

Mendenhall Glacier is receding rapidly, but still an awesome sight. It is the fifth largest glacier in North America. Access to the glacier for research or enjoyment is now limited, due to the melting and hollowing out of the glacier from within. A momma bear and her cub had been spotted near the glacier yesterday, but we did not see any today. We did see some bald eagles chasing a crow as we walked around the port.

The port area is your basic tourist center of jewelry stores, Alaskan souvenirs, and T-shirt shops. Linda was very grateful that the Robert’s Tram cost $27 round trip, so she could easily opt out based on price. Linda did find a beautiful charm at Diamonds International, while Deedee showed restraint and used her Alaskan magazine coupons to collect free coasters around town (family – please forget this when you receive your gifts).
We had lunch and a brew at the Red Dog Saloon for those of you who have visited Juneau.
Tough assignment but we handled it.

Wildlife (not DeeDee) update. We did see 'A' whale yesterday evening after we left Ketchikan. No great shakes...couldn't even identify what type it was.

Seems trip is off to good start
Linda has hopefully found some new wine makers to add to her list of preferred vendors
Roof repairs should be starting soon
Enjoy your commentary especially DeeDee keeping Linda on straight and narrow during trip
