Day 8 DeeDee Strikes Gold

A rainy morning greeted us in Skagway at 7 am. Not to be deterred by a few drops we headed downstairs to board the White Pass & Yukon Route train that was to take us 20.4 miles up to the White Pass at 2,865 feet. This border of the US and Canada was the site of thousands of stampeders as they crossed into the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush. The train ride took us through not only historic points but some beautiful scenery as well. At the summit…the rain had changed to snow. A light dusting blanketed much of the landscape covering the dirty, melty snow with a pristine layer of white.
At the conclusion of the train ride we found our way to the Red Onion Saloon and Brothel. Since they weren’t hiring at the moment, we settled for some food and drink. Good thing too as the skimpy costumes weren’t really to our liking.
We further enjoyed a walk around this historic town. Unfortunately most of the town today is the typical cruise port…shopping. However, there is a US National Park facility there which did highlight the less commercial side with some historic displays and a great movie.
So how did DeeDee strike it rich? After several exhausting days of searching through display case after display case, something just called out to DeeDee. She had been admiring the Alaskan Gold Quartz jewelry since the first stop in Ketchikan and now it was time to make one of the pieces her own.

Back to the ship for a quick afternoon snack and then time to search for tomorrow’s tour possibilities. We’ve concluded that no matter how much the excursions cost, they are still cheaper than any trip to the jewelry store.
